Creative lighting – candles

Saturday, May 21

Sometimes all it takes to elevate your home or your parties to the next level is to add a bit of light. Light has a wonderful way of transforming a room making it more intimate and inviting.

Candles are an inexpensive way of adding light to any event. The great thing about them is they are so easy to make you can customize them to fit the theme of any party. Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

Making candles is a lot easier than you might think. You can purchase big blocks of candle wax and wicks at most craft stores. All you really have to do is melt the wax down and fill up any container you wish.

Chopping the wax into finer pieces will make the melting process go quicker. Since wax is hard to clean up I suggest melting it in a container that you don’t mind throwing away. A soup can works great for this. Make sure is is clean and dry before you use it. Place the can in a pot of boiling water to melt it. After that add a wick to the container and fill it up with wax. Let it dry and you are good to go.

Here is a quick tip: If the object you have chosen to make your candles in doesn’t want to stand up straight, like eggs for example, place a drop of wax on a cookie sheet and then set the candle on it. Once dry the wax should easily release from the cookie sheet and stay attached to the candle creating a base for it to sit upon.
